BGHS '64 X 50' Committee Meeting - Thursday, April 24, 2014 @ 11:30 AM at PT’s Gold - Minutes

Classmates Attending: Mike Biller, Gina Bronowicz, Sandy Farino, Frank Koot, Ed McDonnell, Dale Rodrigues, Josephine Reising, Janice Routsong, and Pat Russell.

Administration
1. Class Roster/Mailings – We have mailing addresses for about 100 classmates and emails for about 60 classmates. We will continue to use email and the Class website as the primary means of communication. Now that the dates of the Reunion (October 17 & 18, 2014) have been determined, one USPS mailing will be made as soon as the registration form has been developed. The registration form will also ask if it is OK to publish in a booklet their locator information (mailing address, phone number & email). Please pass on any email and/or mailing address updates to Pat. The address booklet will be printed but will not be posted on the website. During the meeting, while we were looking at the list of classmates whom we do not have addresses, Dale said James Helmbolt had died some time ago. He died in Feb 1995.

2. Memory Book – The Memory Book is coming along; however Chuck and Gary desperately need more photos. Every classmate sending in a submission should send Chuck a current photo, a family photo and any photos taken while we were at Gorman. An example of an individual’s Memory Book page is being produced and will be on the website in about a week. The completed Memory Book will be online both as web pages and as a .pdf file for download/printing. Gina stated that she has a group of pictures from our Gorman days and is working on getting them scanned.

3. Financial – Joyce reported the following: A total of $1400 received from only seven folks ($700 toward class gift/classmates memorial; $600 general use – committee’s discretion; $50 to help classmates attend; and $50 designated as deposit on registration). Joyce will be collecting and disbursing all funds and should there be any surplus it will become part of the Class Gift in memory of our deceased classmates. Joyce will turn over the Class Gift donation to BGHS along with donor names for recognition/tax purposes. The Class Gift will be a bench at BGHS in memory of our deceased classmates.

4. Invitations/Registration

a. The Committee again discussed inviting members of the Classes of 1963 and 1965 to join us and this was again rejected. However, any classmate can invite whom they like as guests and indicate such on their registration.
b. The Committee determined that the registration fee will be $10 per person if not attending the banquet on Saturday and if attending the banquet, the registration fee is included in the $80 per person cost. The registration fee covers mailings, program printings, name tags, etc.
c. An address/locator book will be given to everyone registering containing the names and addresses of attendees and others who have agreed to have their information published. It will not be on the website.

Homecoming Friday Activities
– Diana is coordinating the activities below:
5. BGHS morning activities – Alumni Memorial Mass (special recognition of our deceased classmates); coffee/pastries/campus tours, and pep rally in the gym..

6. Lunch – pay-as-you-go at DW Bistro

7. BGHS Pre-game Party and Homecoming football game
– Join in the activities the school has planned in the in the upper field. A special section will be set up for us to meet. Food, beer and wine will be available for purchase. Afterwards, attend the game in beautiful Fertitta Field.

8. Post Game – Classmates have choices between Ryan Hall at Gorman, PT’s Pub, or our recommendation, meet back at South Point in the Grand View Lounge, a large casual bar.

Hotel/Saturday Activities
9. Hotel – South Point

10. Room block – We reserved ten rooms on Wednesday October 15th, 20 rooms on Thursday October 16th, 20 rooms on Friday, October 17th, 20 rooms on Saturday October 18th and 10 rooms on Sunday, October 19th. The resort fee has been waved and there is complimentary transportation to/from the airport. Reservations must be made by phone by calling toll free 1-866-791-7626 and identifying your self as being with Bishop Gorman 50th Reunion. Airport shuttle reservations are required to be made 24-hours in advance of arrival by calling; 1-866-791-7626 or local 702-797-8901. The room block expires on September 15th and unsold rooms revert back to the hotel. Folks calling for a reservation after September 15th will be offered a room at the prevailing rate. If we exceed the number of rooms in the block before September 15th and the hotel is not sold out, then our group rate will be honored – so we need to encourage folks to make their reservations early.

Room Rates: Wed., Thurs., & Sun (15th, 16th, & 19th) - $55 + $6.60 (tax) = $61.60 per night
Fri. & Sat. (17th & 18th) - $95 + $11.40 = $106.40 per night

11. Morning Nostalgia Tour – Janice and Gina investigated the cost and time for a bus to downtown Las Vegas and it was too expensive, however they presented an alternative of getting a group rate on the new High Roller observation wheel (aka Ferris Wheel) at the Linq. The current group rate is $23.95/pp and we suggested a time of 11:00 AM. By purchasing the tickets in advance we also would avoid the normal long wait and we could ride together. We still need to find out the number of tickets needed for the group rate, how far in advance tickets need to be purchased, and if hotel transportation to/from the hotel is practical. Judy DuCharme also offered to assist in this effort.

12. Evening dinner
– The banquet will be held in the Sonoma Room that can handle 100. There will be a cash bar beginning at 6:00 PM (as well as other non-alcoholic beverages at no-charge), buffet at 7:00 PM and program from 8:00 to 10:00 PM. The Committee agreed with the selection of the Sonoma Vineyard Dinner Buffet (see below). The cost of the food is $50/per person + $9.50 (gratuity) + $4.05 (sales tax) = $63.55, and the Committee added $16.45/person to cover the cost of the Disc Jockey, dance floor, Audio/Visual charges, table decorations/centerpieces, and reunion registration fee for a total charge per person of $80.00.

13. Program
– So far, this is the progress: disc Jockey playing our period music, continually running slideshow of old/new pictures submitted and from the Class website. The Committee would like Chuck Giasson to make the few announcements. Display tables will be available for folks to bring in memorabilia to share. Seeking a volunteer to be in charge of setting up the table decorations.

Our 50th Reunion - '64 x 50' is October 17 - 18, 2014

Our 50th Reunion activities will start on Friday, October 17th as part of the 2014 Homecoming activities at the new BGHS campus. Saturday, October 18th activities are still being planned, so check back later for details. Besides marking your calendars, below are two things to do right now:
1. Chuck and Gary are producing the memory book and they need your input. All you have to do is fill out the online form and click the "submit" button and your input will be sent directly to Chuck and Gary. Click here for the form.

2. Joyce, has graciously volunteered to be our treasurer/registrar for the Reunion - please read her letter below.

As soon as details are finalized, a mailing with the registration form will be sent and a copy of the registration form will be on the website. Planning progress to date is below - if you have a questions or comments, please contact any of the Committee members.

Hello everyone!

Hard to believe it has been 50 years! I am still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. What I do know is - I want this reunion to be the most memorable ever. We all should enjoy one another - good friends, fond memories, and let's not forget - the dancing.

I wanted to participate in making the 50 Fabulous - best I could do from afar is help with the finances and offer to establish our fundraising account. At this point in time, we are still in the planning stages and do not know what our ultimate goal will be. What I do know is we will need upfront money to launch the event - deposits for a location, booking a photographer and/or videographer, disc jockey, etc. Also, a rainy day fund will be set aside for some classmates who may need assistance (anonymously of course) to attend the evening event. We are hoping to keep the admission tickets down to a minimum, but at this stage in the game, we are not sure what our overall costs will be.

In addition to the event itself, the committee is also asking for donations for a 50th Reunion Class Gift in memory of our deceased classmates.

We established an account at Wells Fargo Bank: BGHS64-50th. Please start the ball rolling by mailing me a check made out to BGHS64-50th to:

Joyce Weisdorf
1730 Palisades Drive
Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

Donations can be made to the general fund, and if you wish to also include a portion to be designated to the class gift, please feel free to do so.

If you wish to make a deposit directly at a local Wells Fargo branch, please let me know. Send me an email (joyceweisdorf@aol.com) or call me at (310) 383-4576. I will be happy to give you an account number. I do need to know you are doing so, as I am going to track all donations and want you to get credit for what you give or donate.

Any questions or concerns please get in touch with me directly. Of course, if you just want to check in and say hello that would be great too.

I will be giving everyone periodic updates and will continue to ask for your assistance in making this truly a time to remember.

Looking forward to seeing all of you again -

Joyce Mauriello Weisdorf

BGHS Class of ‘64 50th Reunion Planning Meeting – August 20, 2013 - Minutes

Classmates Attending: Mike Biller, Gina Bronowicz, Doug & Judy DuCharme, Sandy Farino, Frank Koot, Ed McDonnell, Dale Rodrigues, Josephine Reising, Janice Routsong, Pat Russell and Betty Stewart.

Administration

1. Memory Book (Crest)– Gary has receive 12 biography reports so far from folks filling out the form on the Class website and has forwarded them to Chuck who is producing a narrative on each individual. Pat is working on a webpage format to post the narratives on the website as they are finished. We all need to encourage Classmates to fill out the form on the Class website and to send pictures to Gary and Chuck.

2. Class Roster/Mailings – Progress is being made in locating folks and to date we have email addresses for about half of the Class. We are also using the FaceBook page that Diana has established, BGHS Class of ‘64, that has 40 members. While the use of the website, FaceBook and emails will be the primary methods of communication, a USPS (snail mail) mailing will be done early next year once the dates for Homecoming and our Reunion are known.

3. Financial – Joyce (Mauriello) Weisdorf has volunteered to be our Treasurer/Registrar and she has already established Wells Fargo Bank accounts for operating funds and Class Gift donation funds. She is working on a letter to be sent to all regarding this. Classmates will have to opportunity to contribute to the operating fund to help offset Reunion costs and/or donate to our Class Gift Fund to BGHS in Memory of our Deceased Classmates on our 50th Reunion if they wish.

4. Registration – As previously decided, the Reunion events will be individually priced. The registration form will be available on the Class website and also sent in a snail mailing. The registration fee will include costs such as mailing, printing, small memorabilia items, etc. Completed registration forms and checks to be mailed to Joyce.

Homecoming Friday Activities

5. The majority of our Reunion time on Homecoming Friday will be at the school, joining in the established annual Homecoming activities. Diana is the point person for Friday and is looking at this addition:

DW Bistro
6115 S Fort Apache Rd (corner of Patrick and Fort Apache)
www.dwbistro.com
This restaurant is just around the corner from BGHS.

Here's what they can offer us:
Side room holds 70 people; patio holds around 30

Here are our choices:
1. order off the menu (regular menu prices)
2. set menu with 3-5 choices (set price)
3. buffet lunch (set price according to # of RSVPs)

Since we are still more than a year out, they can't quote a price; however, I encourage everyone to look at the DW Bistro website on which the lunch (and dinner) menu and prices are listed.

Hotel/Saturday Activities

6. Hotels to consider – Ed McDonnell will contact South Point regarding a room block and a banquet dinner/program. Several attending stated that they would be interested in staying at the hotel Thursday through Saturday nights (Staycation) as it was thought our out-of-town classmates and guests would. Since the Saturday evening banquet would be the largest single expense item, this is where the majority of the donated funds to offset Reunion costs would be applied. There is time to consider other venues if needed.

7. Morning Nostalgia Tour – Janice is looking into a bus tour originating from the hotel in the morning and heading to downtown Las Vegas to the Mob Museum and possibly the Neon Sign Museum. Folks would have time to wander around the Fremont Street Experience and have lunch on their own and then board the bus for the trip back to the hotel. Looking at the possibilities of driving by some of our “old haunts” and the old BGHS Campus on the way. Gina volunteered to join Janice in organizing this event.

Sunday

8. It was the consensus of the committee that Sunday will have no planned Reunion activities.

Roundtable

9. It was agreed to adopt Ed’s nickname for our Reunion – ’64 x 50

10. Josephine informed us of past Reunion participation which is a good indicator of what to expect this time.

11. The idea of having any type of event at the old BGHS campus was discussed and rejected.

12. We graduated on Nevada’s centennial and were having our Reunion on Nevada’s 150th Anniversary year - Pat will seek some proclamation or recognition.

13. The next committee meeting will be early next year – in the mean time everyone is encouraged to report progress via email to all.

BGHS Class of ‘64 50th Reunion Planning Meeting – March 23, 2013 - Minutes

Classmates Attending: Mike Biller, Gina Bronowicz, Fred Cook, Doug & Judy DuCharme, Kate Donnelly, Sandy Farino, Mary Beth Little, Joe Lupo, Ray Maguinness, Pat Russell and Betty Stewart.

Questionnaire Results:
There were 32 responses. Twenty-four (24) vs seven (7) suggested the Fall over the Spring. As far as options, it was a tie, both options one (Friday evening get together, Saturday afternoon tour of BGHS and dinner/music/dancing at the new BGHS and Sunday a BBQ/Picnic at a location TBD, such as Bill & Joe's cabin at Mt. Charleston, a local park,Lake Mead, etc.) and two (Friday evening get together and Saturday evening dinner/music/dancing at an Off-Strip hotel. Sunday a BBQ/Picnic at a location TBD, such as Bill & Joe's cabin at Mt. Charleston, a local park, Lake Mead, etc.) each received 12 votes. Options four (A 3 to 5 day Mexican Riveria cruise and either Choice 1 of Choice 2.) and five (An evening get together, then an optional 3 to 5 day Mexican Riveria cruise for those that signed up for the cruise) each got three votes.

The great result is that 17 of the 32 who responded, volunteered to help and many great comments and suggestions were received which had been previously sent out.

Action Items/Discussions:

1. Reunion to be held in the Fall of 2014 over the BGHS Homecoming weekend. Encourage classmates to attend the next Gorman Homecoming as a test run. Click here to see the 2013 Homecoming schedule.

2. Friday events will be centered around BGHS for the homecoming game activities followed by a get together after the game location TBD. Pat and Ray will visit Gorman after Easter.

3. An off Strip hotel will be contacted for obtaining group room rates for both out of town and local classmates to stay at, and to have a buffet dinner in a meeting room on Saturday evening with a TBD program.. Two hotels were mentioned – Silverton and South Point were suggested. Kate and Sandy agreed to investigate further.

4. Reunion activities for the Sunday will be discussed at the next meeting.

5. Ask one or two of our out of town classmates to locate and contact all of our classmates, including folks that may have only spent only a short time at Gorman ‘60 – ‘64 and any teachers that were with us. Pat has the names of the volunteers. A list of classmates with unknown addresses will be put on the Class website and Pat will contact Gorman about putting a notice in the Alumni newsletter regarding the Reunion and asking alumni to update their contact information.

7. A bio book will be produced – information can be collected through the Class Website (www.bghs64.org) and will be similar to the Crest produced for the 20th Reunion (a copy is available here) – the book will be available on the Class website. A chairperson and committee is needed.

8. Fund raising will be done to present a Class Gift to BGHS in recognition of our 50th Reunion. Committee will be formed to head up this effort and to determine how the funds will be used.

9. Several classmates said they would like to make a donation to help offset the reunion costs. A committee chairperson is needed for this effort.

10. Reunion events will be individually priced, Registration, Friday Night, Saturday Dinner, etc.

11. Reunion information and registration forms will be on the Class website versus mailings.

12. The next Reunion Committee meeting will be NLT September.

Many thanks to Richard and Betty Stewart for hosting this meeting in their super Garage Ma Hall.
