FIFTIETH REUNION – MC (Chuck Giasson) Remarks
Bishop Gorman High School Class of 1964
October 18, 2014

(PART ONE (BEFORE DINNER – 7 PM)

OPENING REMARKS

On behalf of the BGHS Class of 1964, I would like to welcome you to the 50th reunion banquet. It’s been a great couple of days already with the memorial mass, campus tour, pep rally and football game on Friday and High Roller today. We look forward to this banquet, our culminating reunion event.

On 2 June 1964, over 50 years ago, 148 of us were given a Gorman HS diploma in our school gymnasium. Since then, we have lost 33 classmates. We are happy to have 55 classmates here tonight, representing 43% of our living class.

Before I begin the invocation, I want to remind you to please complete the Memory Book questions that are next to your plate. We will review the answers during the main Program, around 8:50 PM.

PLEDGE OF ALEGIENCE

I pledge ...

INVOCATION

Let us Pray. Look upon us as we joyfully assemble once again as the Class of '64 to remember times past and renew friendships made when hair was short and plentiful and skirts were long and colorful. May we take little notice, O God, of how much others have advanced in age - while, by your grace, each of us has only grown in experience.

We give thanks for Bishop Gorman High School and the gifts she engraved on our hearts and minds and for the teachers, coaches and staff who taught and encouraged us - who even at times disciplined us. Let us honor them by keeping our hearts open and young

We remember classmates who couldn't travel here tonight and those who reside in your heavenly Kingdom. Take them in your loving embrace. Draw their spirits ever closer to you.

We offer our heartfelt thanks for those who have worked so creatively to make this reunion a reality and give us a taste of years past by helping us recall pleasant memories and special friendships.

Tonight, as we enjoy this banquet, let us remember with compassion those who are hungry, lonely, sick or without a home. Touch our hearts to share ourselves and our resources to bring justice and peace to all your people.

Lord, Bless this food and drink which we are about to receive. AMEN. Enjoy your meal.

PART TWO (AFTER DINNER – 8 PM)

I hope you all enjoyed your dinner. At this time, I would like to recognize a few folks.
To those who traveled from out of town, please stand. Thank you for taking the time and expense to be here – that means a lot. Welcome back. (Ask who traveled the furthest)
To those still living in town please raise your hand. Many of you have been attending pre-reunion events and know each other well. I challenge you to reach out to the out-of –towners. (Ask who has never left Las Vegas?)

Sustained by hope for a bright future, we graduated as the high school years turned into the Vietnam era, which saw 32 of our classmates serve in our Armed Forces. Those who served, please stand up. Thank you for your service. We have a special section in the Memory Book recording your service.

To the reunion planning committee, please stand. We thank Joyce for being the Treasurer/Registrar, Diana & Dale for the table decorations and Friday's activities, Gina and Janice for including the High Roller, Ed for getting with South Point, Gary, Alana and Pat for the Memory Book, the catering staff, Shane Richardson our Kool Katz DJ, and BGHS for doing some of the printing. We thank you all so much for your time and expertise to make such a successful reunion. A special thanks to Pat Russell, who led the committee and spent so much time to ensure success. Pat is our web master and has done a spectacular job keeping us connected over the years. Thanks, Pat!

The estimated amount the Class Gift to Gorman is $7,000 in memory of our deceased classmates.

Intro for Mary Solomon's presentation

Many of our classmates have done a lot for our reunions. Two that have stood out throughout the years are Bill Terry and Joe Lupo for the many times they let us use there cabin. Some of our classmates visit the cabin when it is not time for a reunion.

You might have wondered why the “For the record” section of the Memory Book on our website was blank. We waited so that we could test your memories tonight. Answers will also be posted on our site. It is time to review the correct answers for the Memory Book test.
Gary Fowler will now come up and announce what we think are the correct answers. We need your help to keep us straight. You get one point for each correct answer, so keep track of your answers to see who has the best memory.

CLOSING REMARKS

After graduating we soon learned that there was always someone smarter, better looking, or more successful, but as Nat King Cole sang in 1964, “There will never be another you.” It’s the whole package that counts, and that package only improves with age, which is why all of us are far more interesting people today than we were 50 years ago.

From similar roots we have walked divergent paths – paths that have provided us tonight with a roomful of tales waiting to be told, including remembrances of those no longer with us. We hope that you will use this last event of the reunion, to reconnect with and listen to all our classmates present. We also hope that we all continue to stay connected and meet back again for the next reunion.

May God continue to bless our Class.

It's finally here…our 50th Reunion! It seems impossible, doesn't it? But this means that it's time to make your arrangements to take part in our planned festivities on October 17th and 18th and celebrate this milestone, renew and revisit old friendships, reflect on those who are no longer with us and the blessings that make it possible for you, and all of us, to attend. You won't want to miss this momentous occasion.

If you haven't had a chance to stay current with our class reunion progress on Facebook (yes, we're keeping up with social media), it's not too late to sign up online, connect with us, and stay up to date on our reunion plans, particularly post-reunion where I'm sure it will be a format to post photos and status updates. If you're keeping to your old fashioned ways, then go to our class website online (www.bghs64.org) for all the same reunion information sans the classmates' comments.

Joyce has established a Class Gift Fund at Wells Fargo Bank to buy a memorial bench on the BGHS campus. Our goal is to collect $2,500 to purchase the bench, adjoining Jack Baud's, in Memory of our '64 Deceased Classmates in recognition of our 50th Reunion. Anything over and above what we collect for the bench will be donated to the school's tuition fund as part of our class gift. Checks can be made out to BGHS64-50th and notated Class Gift. You will see a place to donate (optional) on your reunion registration form. Please send to:
Joyce Weisdorf
1730 Palisades Drive
Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

Gary and Chuck are creating a Memory Book but they need information from each of us. If you have not entered your submission, please go to www.bghs64.org/form.htm. This book will serve as a wonderful keepsake and update of our lives since graduating. They also want to include information about all our classmates who served in the military, so include the dates of service. The book will include pictures in military uniform, along with past school and present-day pictures. Please send those via email no later than September 5th to:
Chuck Giasson
chckret@gmail.com

Information about registering for the reunion, Homecoming schedule, and group room reservations at the South Point are included with this mailing. Don't miss out!

Let the celebration begin…
